Opportunity

As a leading center for scientific discovery, the renowned institution deserved a world-class gateway that reflects its global impact and ambition.

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) welcomes a global community of researchers, yet many visitor-facing functions remained dispersed across campus. The organization sought to unify the arrival experience, consolidate key services, and create a more collaborative environment for scientists, partners, students, and guests. The project also marks the beginning of a broader campus and institutional transformation, strengthening connections between research, education, and innovation while creating a more welcoming and accessible destination for discovery.

Why This Matters

  1. 01

    Support Scientific Exchange

BNL’s stakeholders envisioned an arrival destination that replaces multiple stops with an intuitive, hospitable experience for researchers navigating the operational complexity of a federal laboratory.

  2. 02

    Connect Science With Support Functions

Bringing visitor services, conferences, and administrative teams together creates the proximity needed for faster coordination, stronger relationships, and more spontaneous exchange across their scientific community.

  3. 03

    Signal Future Expansion

The Science and User Support Center is a catalyst for Discovery Park's transformation, enhancing BNL's engagement of industry, academia, educators, and the surrounding community.

Solution

A central hub of activity brings BNL’s public-facing functions together, balancing security, hospitality, and opportunities for collaboration and spontaneous exchange.

The design brings Brookhaven's visitor services, conference facilities, and support functions together within a single hospitality-driven destination. Organized around a central atrium, the building creates a clear and intuitive experience, with visitor processing, conferencing, and gathering spaces on the ground floor and workplaces above. A monumental staircase and multi-story opening strengthen visual connections throughout the building, while daylit interiors, adaptable meeting spaces, and a welcoming public realm support both formal scientific exchange and spontaneous interaction.

Impact

The project transforms BNL’s arrival experience, creating a welcoming destination that better supports research, collaboration, and public engagement.

Science and User Support Center unifies visitor services, workplaces, and gathering spaces, creating a more connected experience that fosters innovation and discovery.

What Changed Because of This

  1. 01

    One-Stop Arrival

Researchers and guests can now complete essential onboarding, badging, orientation, and support needs within a single, clearly organized destination near the entrance.

  2. 02

    Connected Culture

Flexible conference spaces and linked workplaces create more opportunities for scientists, staff, and partners to meet, exchange ideas, and build relationships.

  3. 03

    Gateway for Growth

The building strengthens Brookhaven's public identity, creating a visible destination that reflects its leadership in research and innovation.

The building’s identity comes from solving several problems with one architectural idea rather than treating performance, function, and form as separate objectives.
